Understanding the Promise
The Detroit Promise is a scholarship that helps students who graduate from a high school in the city of Detroit, and live in the City of Detroit, obtain a degree tuition-free at one of 26 partnering Michigan Universities and Colleges.
As a last dollar scholarship, the Promise pays all tuition and fees that exist AFTER a student’s financial aid package is applied.
There are two main programs that students can apply to:
The University Program requires a min. GPA (set by individual colleges) and acceptance into the University’s undergraduate admissions program. If approved, students can access 4 years of tuition support at any of the partnering 26 Universities.
The Community College program does not have a GPA or testing requirement. All students who apply and complete the required enrollment steps can access 2+ years of tuition support at any of the 6 participating community colleges.
The Detroit Promise also offers supports to help students successfully graduate. Supports include campus coaches at all community college, summer funding, community events, book scholarships and access to emergency funds.
